Techno Ecology

SoLow writing an Instagram message to Elon Musk

…You spend the day writing to Elon Musk and Sven Väth, of course.

It was just another day in the studio this morning; talking to our publisher about the ins and outs of Shibumi Records’ latest release. The track in question is Peak Love Cycle by SoLow, ThatMan & LaChap. It’s an ‘eco techno’ banger that takes advantage of a broken feature in a distortion pedal to create a sound similar to crickets chirping on a tropical summer evening. Maybe two or three minutes of chunky bass drums and some hide and seek toms have you wading through an endless rainforest before emerging into a clearing…

The crickets ease off a bit and Elon Musk’s voice fades in, making a brilliantly profound statement about what mankind is doing to its own ecosystem. It’s “an inconvenient truth” some might say. The artists believe it’s worthy food for thought entering the ears of the open minded raver as they await the next bass drop.

We are making a very significant change to the chemical constituency of the atmosphere and the oceans and one that is almost impossible to reverse. When we look back on these days in the future, we want to be able to say that we did the actions that were right. The actions that were important, because I think it’s pretty difficult to say, go 20, 30 or 40 years in the future - what do you say to your kids or your grandkids?
— Elon Musk

The track is about to be submitted when the legal team come in screaming “stop!” Apparently, somebody (not Elon Musk) owns the copyright to the recording of this statement and we have to remove it from the track.

“What’s the point of wading through the rainforest if there’s nothing to find in the middle?”

La Chap’s challenge puts everyone in the same boat. The track needs something in the middle. In fact, the whole point of the track is the sample, so we need to do something about this.

“Let’s just ask Elon Musk… he likes techno” somebody says.

“And he knows Sven Väth!“ replies SoLow.

Perfect. So we spend our lunch hour writing some fairly decent letters to both Elon and Sven and send them through Instagram. Might as well ask…

Dear Sven,

We produced a techno track recently on our record label that sampled Elon's voice. We sampled Elon because what he said was brilliantly profound and we feel that the message should be repeated to the world in different formats to give it as much exposure as possible (naturlich, our format is techno).

The quote is:

“We are making a very signigifcant change to the chemical constituency of the atmosphere and the oceans and one that is almost impossible to reverse. When we look back on these days in the future, we want to be able to say that we did the actions that were right. The actions that were important, because I think it’s pretty difficult to say, go 20, 30 or 40 years in the future - what do you say to your kids or your grandkids?”

Our publisher is willing to release the track, but copyright law is preventing us from using the sample. If Elon gives us a note of approval of the use of his voice in the track, we have a clear path to success.

We are going to reach out to Elon as well, but should he be difficult to contact, we were hoping that as a fellow techno enthusiast and closer spiritual connection to Elon, you may be able to help remind him of our inbound message.

Wishing you much peace and more beats,

Rory Watts
