Operator

Ableton’s fundamental synthesiser

Summary

Operator is Ableton’s first and most fundamental synthesiser. Robert Henke created it in 2004, and it has stayed a core instrument ever since. Plain as it looks, it’s a very powerful tool. It’s built around four oscillators and a set of algorithms that decide how they connect. They can play side by side, like a classic subtractive synth, or modulate one another to create the bright, metallic and bell-like tones of FM synthesis. Each oscillator can also be drawn harmonic by harmonic, so you can build tones that no other synth makes. Operator is especially good for clean sine basslines that glide between notes, punchy kicks and percussion, glassy keys and evolving textures. It’s also very light on CPU, so you can stack many instances in a busy techno set. Operator is a stock instrument in Live Suite and isn’t included in Intro or Standard.

Features

  • Four oscillators (A–D) that switch between sine, saw, square, triangle and noise waveforms

  • Harmonic waveform editor: an additive editor with up to 64 partials for each waveform musicradar

  • Algorithms that set how the oscillators connect, from a straight four-oscillator mix to stacked FM chains

  • Per-oscillator envelopes with loop, beat and sync modes for rhythmic movement

  • Coarse, fine and fixed-frequency tuning for each oscillator, so you get both harmonic ratios and inharmonic or drum tones

  • Oscillator feedback for grit and noise

  • Filter with low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch and morph modes, analogue-modelled circuit types, drive and its own envelope

  • LFO that can be synced to tempo, with its own envelope, routable to oscillators, filter or pitch

  • Pitch envelope for kick drums, zaps and risers

  • Global section with glide, spread, transpose, voice count and a Time control that scales all envelopes at once

  • Modulation routings from velocity, key, aftertouch and the mod wheel to most parameters
