Creating Dance Drums

A dance beat is led by a kick drum on every beat. It opens with a “smack”, followed by a deep bass tail. It keeps time, but needs the support of other percussive elements to add a sense of character and energy.

Drum Rack

Drum Rack is where most beats in Live begin. It looks like a classic 4×4 grid of pads, but each pad is really a container. It can hold any instrument (a sample in Drum Sampler or Simpler, a Drum Synth, Operator, even a third-party plug-in) plus its own chain of effects.

Collision

Collision is a mallet percussion synthesiser built with Applied Acoustics Systems using physical modelling. It works the way a real instrument does: something strikes an object, and the object resonates.

Electric

Electric is a modelled electric piano, built with Applied Acoustics Systems and based on the classic instruments of the 1970s. It uses no samples.

Drift

Drift is Ableton’s most approachable synthesiser and is included in every edition of Live, so it’s often the first synth people learn. It’s a classic subtractive design: two oscillators and a noise generator, shaped by a filter and envelopes.

Wavetable

Wavetable is Ableton’s flagship modern synthesiser, introduced in Live 10. Each of its two main oscillators reads through a wavetable: a series of single-cycle waveforms that you can scan through smoothly.

Tension

Tension is a string synthesiser built with Applied Acoustics Systems using physical modelling. Instead of starting with a waveform, it simulates the parts of a real stringed instrument and how they interact.

Simpler

Simpler is the sampler most Live users reach for first, and for good reason. Drop any audio onto it and you can play it straight away. It plays a single sample but has three distinct modes.

Sampler

Sampler is Ableton’s deepest sample instrument. Where Simpler plays one sample, Sampler can hold hundreds, spread across the keyboard and across velocity layers.

Impulse

Impulse is Ableton’s original drum sampler and has been a fixture of Live for many years. It holds eight samples, one per slot, mapped across a single octave from C3 upwards.

Drum Sampler is Ableton’s newest sampler, added to Live in version 12.1. It’s built for one job: playing back single hits, such as kicks, snares, hats and percussion, inside a Drum Rack.

Analog is a virtual analogue synthesiser built with Applied Acoustics Systems. It doesn’t copy one vintage machine. Instead it combines the best-loved features of classic hardware into a single modern instrument.

Operator

Operator is Ableton’s first and most fundamental synthesiser. Robert Henke created it in 2004, and it has stayed a core instrument ever since. Plain as it looks, it’s a very powerful tool. It’s built around four oscillators and a set of algorithms that decide how they connect.
